In line with my blogs being aligned with a timeline associated with the Coronavirus pandemic I am asking to receive a message of support and good health for everyone in our current chaotic times….

Today’s message is about salt. Salt is a mineral composed primarily of sodium chloride, a chemical compound belonging to the larger class of salts; salt in its natural form as a crystalline mineral is known as rock salt or halite. Salt is present in vast quantities in seawater, where it is the main mineral constituent. The open ocean has about 35 grams of solids per litre of sea water, a salinity of 3.5%. [1]

Besides many other benefits salt is a unique compound that possesses anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and mucolytic properties, which helps promote the health of our respiratory system significantly. Though not many people know this, inhaling ultrapure micronized salt into the nostril can elicit these effects in the lungs. This technique is known as halotherapy, and has shown potential in reducing allergies and managing asthma.

Sodium also plays a role in maintaining the sensitivity of insulin towards blood glucose. In addition to magnesium, sodium also helps to ensure that insulin functions as intended, and clears glucose in a timely manner. [2]

Despite all of these health dangers of sodium chloride, you do benefit from some natural salt in your diet. Used in moderation, it should be a rich source of trace minerals that are vital to a well functioning body, even in very small amounts.

True sea salt is far better than industrial sodium chloride with aluminium derived anticaking agents. But because the human race has polluted the oceans to such an extent, there is some concern about contaminants, even with real sea salt.

Himalayan salt is one of the best types of salt to consume because it has not been processed as has normal table salt, which greatly reduces its health benefits to the human body. In contrast, Himalayan salt contains up to 84 different types of minerals in their natural form that can have significant health benefits.

If you have never thought about it, now might be a great time to switch to real salt, it is one of those simple life changes that really can make a difference.
